What inspired you to design the Twist and Sift package?
My mum is a fairly inspirational baker and she taught me the basics years ago.
Occasionally I pull out the mix-master and make a mess and I guess it was the frustration of double handling flour when you sift it that led me to my solution. I also think that packaging should add value to a product and tried to achieve that in my solution as well.
Have you always wanted to be an industrial designer?
No not always. For years I had no idea what I wanted to do and it varied from jeweller to rock star to ski instructor, the underlying theme was that wherever I was I was always tinkering on something or building something so industrial design became the obvious choice. Now I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully in a job that I enjoy, I’ve learnt not to plan things too tightly as plans have a way of changing when you don’t expect them to.
What have you learnt most from being involved with the Cormack Innovation Awards?
The size and opportunity of the packaging industry. One of the biggest things that I took away from the project was just how much impact the packaging industry has on people’s lives, it was the factory visit that really brought it home when I saw the volume of product that was produced while we were standing in front of the machines. It made me realise how much packaging there is in the world and how big an opportunity for design there is.
Who is your hero?
I wouldn’t say that I have 1 specific hero but a list of people that I look up to. I look up to people that are energetic and excited about what they do and have the gumption to see it through despite how many times they are told they can’t.
